Tasty Tempura at Tenya – Tokyo’s cheap restaurant chain

Alongside sushi, tempura is Japan’s most known speciality dish. Softly battered and instantly deep fried veggies or seafood are served on rice in a rice bowl (tendon), with soba noodles, or simply as a side dish. Japan is known for keeping its food fresh despite the frying, tempura is truly Japanese when the taste of the vegetables is preserved and only lightly coated with a delicious layer of batter. Probably the best tempura deal in Tokyo can be devoured at Tempura Tendon Tenya 天丼てんや. Tenya is the Japanese specialist for tempura. A cheap restaurant chain with a very nice choice of tempura. One of the pleasures of being a perpetual traveler (to me) is going out to eat. Partly as a necessity – our hotels and apartments do not come with dinner… but mostly, I consider it a great luxury and highlight of the day. Japanese shabu restaurant and French pâtisserie in Taipei

5th July 2013. We have arrived in Taipei and went to a shabu shabu (hot pot) restaurant today. Shabu Shabu means you are cooking the meal yourself in a metal pot with boiling water. We also indulged in some luscious cakes at one of Taipei’s French looking pastry shops. Food in Taipei is delicious and fun. The Japanese-style shabu shabu restaurant we visited is called Shabu-Sen (涮鮮日式火鍋). Location: Mínquan East Road, Zhongshan District. In between Minguan West Road Station and Zhiongshan Elementary School Station.   At Shabu-Sen you order a main platter of raw seafood, vegetables or meat. 30th June 2013. Our last Sunday in Seoul. Today we hooked up with Tomek’s work colleague Dan and his girlfriend Mimi. Dan has come to Seoul five years ago, not for kimchi but Mimi and the two now live a bit further out of Seoul but came to visit. Dan is working as a freelancer like Tomek which is how they met. Mimi makes artisan soap in her wonderful work-shop called It’s Soap. The kind that makes Lush blush. Mimi is able to create customized soap bars meeting clients’ most fanciful wishes. Incorporating ingredients provided by her customers into soap bars, who believe milky elements to be beneficial, thereby mothers supplying their nutritious fluids, not only to their newborns (yes, soap bars with breastmilk), is no biggie. National Museum, Seoul’s Architecture, Veggie Kraze Burger

23rd June 2013. Labelled as the most representative museum in Korea and as one of the six major museums of the world, people who wrote this mainly refer to size. Seoul’s National Museum is a big historical museum. With vast and spacious architecture. Megalomania comes to mind when trying to describe the building structure. But it can withstand earthquakes and the displayed items stand on shock resistant platforms. The museum uses natural light and fire resistant building material. The resemblance to an overground bunker cannot be denied. Location: 137 Seobinggo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Line 4, Jungjang Line Ichon Station, Exit 2 or take the underpass. Admission: Free! And you can take pictures (no flash nor tripod). They close at midnight and most of the time, we are just about coming home. May 23rd and 27th, 2013. Diary format. Two rather unspectacular days. We stayed at home to work, then went out to get some groceries, worked some more, I cooked dinner for us and we worked some more. Night’s entertainment focuses on fantasy (although the movie Confessions about Japanese school bullies is high on our to-watch-list). We only just got hooked on Game of Thrones. There are oodles of noodles in Tokyo. I used to categorise Vietnam as the noodle soup meister (pho soup was on the menu everyday) but it seems that Tokyo is a record breaker in the amount of soup eateries. Noodle soup restaurants are cheap, no fuss and plenty to choose from. The only spoiler is for vegetarians, as most broths are meat based. That is why we mainly live on miso – the divine cholesterol free soup alternative, I will elaborate later on in the post. Very vegan restaurant in Budapest

It was day two in Budapest and we had found a really cool flat but not really any cool restaurants. Strolling aimlessly through Budapest, it was mainly kebab and pizza places or traditional Hungarian meat based food. We ended up having greasy Asian fried noodles with microscopic salmon slices and a lot of excess oil. There was a Tesco and Hungarian style lush bakery just outside our rented flat but that was for breakfast. We were hungry for some culinary dinner adventure in Hungary, not home base cooking.
