Striking lightning

Striking lightning

Are you as fascinated by thunderstorms and lightning as I am. No? Then after the following pictures you should be. Yesterday, flashing bright light penetrated the night on Koh Samui and woke me up. There was an enormous thunderstorm lining the vault of heaven.

It was strange not to hear any noise but the lightning was appealingly far away. In fact, it neither rained nor thundered but I woke up nevertheless.  I have that weird but much appreciated light sensitivity while I sleep. As if a sixth sense sort of thing, I noticed that as a kid I would detect fires, that had just started in the neighbourhood at night and wake up, preceding everybody else and before the fire brigade had arrived. The fire detection thing happened three times so far. Taking into account the workings of big cities, not that much maybe.  Probably, I am just a light sleeper.

Yesterday night, I engaged in fascinating nocturnal activity one more time. After robbing Tomek of his good night’s sleep, we went to the beach (just outside our hotel room, yeah), to experience a surreal sight. Lightning, that would spark up in unusual high frequency above the gulf of Thailand, transforming the sky from pitch black to white and purple and grey. No rain, no thunder. Nature’s amazing spectacle was peculiarly tranquil. It looked as if the sun was somehow malfunctioning, rising above the horizon and shedding light on the bay, while suddenly burning out and turning into night mode again. It was dark, at the same time, unnaturally bright. That’s how it must be like living in some kind of alien solar system.

Enjoy the amazing pictures! I have a few shots, although it was pretty much hit’n miss photography. No photoshop editing on these:

And the Greek input to thunder. Due to the current financial crisis, Zeus was short of cash benefits. Judge his work for yourself.
