We did it again. Infatuated by the fun all male ballet performance ‘Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo‘, we went to see the ‘Calypso’ transvestite cabaret in Bangkok.
Admittedly, when I first heard the word Calypso it made me think of ice cream – a similar sounding brand name for flavoured frozen water in tubes to squeeze out which was very popular as I grew up in Germany. However, Calypso has more to do with Greek mythology. It is the name of a Greek nymph, whereas the meaning of the word refers to ‘hiding’ or ‘concealing’.
Let me tell you, that those Calypsos on stage do not have the intention to hide much, stripping down to their bare beauty. And why should they? With divine bodies, long legs, round breasts, perfect hair, feminine movements, delicate faces, the delightful diva attitude – it was difficult to spot any crude male features. To expose their attractive female bodies and to be admired by the audience was charmingly achieved through dashing dance choreography, catchy playback songs and typical cabaret drama comedy. Many have already undergone transgender surgery and are stunning women. The only thing that gives them away is their deep voices.
Fast changing outfits, stage appearance and songs from Japan (hilarious Geisha mime), Korea and the western world holds your breath – big feathers, tight dresses, sexy underwear, great hair dress, glitter-glamour-gogo acts are Calypso’s characteristics that kept us very well entertained. Set in a packed Cabaret style theatre with small tables and tiny red lamps, served drinks throughout the show, it felt like we time traveled to a burlesque twenties revue.
All in all a gripping Parisian Moulin Rouge, Lido, Crazy Horse girls inspired entertainment.
We luckily still got tickets after the first show was sold out that day.
Always busy at the ticket counter.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: my pics of the Calypsos!
A star is born.
Look here and there all around you.
Tough times (only) for the guys.
Hilarious geisha act.
Too hot for clothes.
Beauty lift up.
|Posing with the drama queens.||Thank you for the honor, ladies.|
|OMG – surrounded by so much beauty!|
|Saying hello to the glamour girl.||All is good but I am tiny.|
Lady Gaga attended the show just one week before us, during her ‘Born this way ball’ tour in Bangkok on the 25th of May occupying 20 seats!
Calypso gin & tonic cheers!
