John Carter – the movie

…teaches us not to throw away our luck once we have it. That is a worthwhile lesson, even if the film doesn’t surprise with new ideas and is basically a remix of the Avatar movie and the Star Wars episodes. The similarities are striking, the differences in plot and visual make over not so much.

The movie begins with the fascinating world on another planet, which is Mars as we learn, then starts again in England at the end of the 19th century. You keep wondering how they will manage to bring the two together but soon we are brought back to Mars together with courageous Cowboy John Carter from Virginia. The confusion of his origin and name is mixed up by the alien life form on Mars, who show a matching resemblance to the Navi species from the Avatar movie. The film uses the mix up as an constant joke as the aliens call Carter ‘Virginia’ all the time.

So Carter is beamed from England to the red planet where he meets the princess of the kingdom of Helium (pretty fast), falls in love of course and eventually helps to rescue her city from the baddies, which plan to destroy peaceful Helium. Carter is helped by the Avatar looking aliens and a faithful dog, which earns loads of laughs for its canine behavior.

After the marriage to the princess of Helium Carter is so convinced of his new life on Mars, that in an act of arrogance he throws away his transporter medallion and finds himself back in England.

Now you go figure, if he makes it back or not :)

What a hassle because of one wrong decision. I sure learned that lesson :)

Words of wisdom: Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love, or a new country. (Anais Nin)
